Dietz, Robert Sinclair

(b. Westfield, New Jersey, 14 September 1914;

d. Tempe, Arizona, 19 May 1995), marine geology and geomorphology, plate tectonics, planetary science.

Widely known for pioneering contributions to the geology of the seafloor and to geological aspects of the theory of plate tectonics, Dietz also made important scientific contributions to the recognition of impact structures, particularly of ancient, eroded impact scars on Earth, which he named astroblemes(star wounds).
