Former BAR turned Fager's Island turns 40
As Fager's Island plans to celebrate its 40th anniversary Tuesday, owner John Fager reflects on how much his "island" has evolved during the years.
"The place has grown with Ocean City and has taken on a life of its own," he said, smiling.
"Looking at Fager's Island now, it's hard to believe it almost didn't make it."
In 1972, a young Fager bought two acres on Ocean City's bayside. At the time, the real estate market was booming and his plan was to develop the land into 44 town homes.
As luck would have it, just as construction was about to begin, the real estate market toppled out.
