Early Life and Training
Antonio Canal, also known as Canaletto, was born in Venice on October 7, 1697.
His father, Bernardo Canal, was a theater artist, and Antonio initially assisted him in creating scenery for Venetian theaters. He studied painting under his father's guidance.
Influences and Artistic Development
In 1719, Canaletto traveled to Rome, where he encountered the renowned vedutista Giovanni Paolo Pannini.
Inspired by Pannini's work, Canaletto began painting his own famous vedute (cityscapes) of Venice. His first known signed work is "Architectural Capriccio" (1723).
Early Style and Techniques
Unlike many artists of his time, Canaletto initially painte
